Yarnbombing in Rowntree Park - Saturday 13 July - Sneak Preview

The Caged Bird Sings! (do you know why?)
All this week I've been posting a daily pic on Facebook of some of the yarnbombs that are going to appear tomorrow at the Yarnbombing Event in York.  This event is part of the Rowntree Park Party which takes place from 2-5pm in (you've guessed it) Rowntree Park.

Vase of Flowers
In case you're not a Facebook addict I've included all the pics here for you to have a look at.   These smaller items are just some of the yarnbombs that have been donated in advance of the event, and being small you might miss them if you're not looking carefully.  So here they are - in the limelight!  There are of course some larger pieces which I'm keeping under wraps until the big day but you'll have no trouble spotting them (and there'll be an after party blogpost too for those who can't make it!).

Fairy Toadstools
Birds & Daisies

Knitted Hairclips

Rabbit
Big Knitting
Little Duck

See if you can spot them all.  There'll be lots to look at (and some things to buy on the day - supporting Oxfam,  in case you didn't know that bit).  And you can still join in with the finger knitting, pompom making, knitting, weaving and extreme knitting at our workshop under the craft canopy (near the Dovecot) from 2-5pm. Hopefully we can keep our display growing all afternoon.

For Les Mis fans - A Little Fall of Rain
If you have yarnbombed items that you want to add to the display, pop along from 9am on Saturday 13 July to put them up in the Yarnbombing area.  We'd like to get the display ready for the start of the Park Party at 2pm.  After the event all items are going to be taken down and sold in aid of Oxfam.

Look out for Deborah New and I. Come and tell us what you think about the event.  We'd love to meet you!

Fourth Yarnbombing Workshop - Rowntree Park Cafe, York

Three of the four tables busy with their yarnbombing preparations

I think this was our busiest workshop yet and there were quite a few little ones joining in making pompoms! We managed to monopolise four tables but as it was a lovely day most of the cafe's regular customers were enjoying the sunshine on the balcony so I don't think we stopped anyone sampling its culinary delights.  In fact I like to think we've introduced a few newcomers!

Pompom making in progress!

People brought lots of lovely crafty donations with them as well as making all sorts while they were with us. The workshop was a mixture of new faces and familiar ones.  We were so pleased that people had enjoyed it so much the first time that they came again!

Selecting yarns for weaving

An extra plus for me was that I got to sample some of the delights from Rowntree Park Cafe which were (of course) fabulous. Hooray!

Yarnbombing Goodies

Yarnboombing Goodies - Detail

Don't forget  - the last chance to join in the yarnbombing comes on Saturday 13 July at the Rowntree Park 92nd Birthday Party.  Anyone with anything to add to the Yarnbombing display can add it from 9am. Deborah & I will be around if you have any questions or need a bit of yarn to attach your finished work to part of the park.  Then from 2-5pm during the Party, you can join us creating under the craft canopy (find us near the Dovecot!) and add anything you make straight to the display.  There will be some items for sale on the day but most will be donated to Oxfam for sale after the event.  Come, see, create!

Third Yarnbombing Workshop - Hobbycraft, York

Settling in at Hobbycraft

Our third Yarnbombing Workshop took place in Hobbycraft, York on Saturday.  We were made very welcome by Carol and her staff who had set up a great space for us and even brought us all hot drinks!  It seems to be a bit of a thing at our workshops because we needed more chairs yet again!

Hard at work

It was mostly new faces at this workshop probably because we had moved to the other side of York for this one.  Also, as it was on a Saturday it gave people working during the week a chance to come along.  Mostly people had made a special trip for our workshop but we did rope in some visitors from Pickering who were just shopping in the store!  Our venue had an added bonus - everyone could check out the Hobbycraft store and all the different activities and workshops they have on offer!

Yarnbombing Goodies

It was a very productive session.  Take a look at all the things brought & made.  Don't they look great!  Can you spot the lovely bluebird that Suzanne made nestling amongst the yarnbombing goodies?  Two of our attendees, Sonia & Fiona, have been busy making all sorts for the day including flowers and owls.  We were lucky enough to get a sneak preview of one of the owls - and he was so cute.  Worth coming to the event just to see them, I'd say!

Trying out extreme knitting!

And of course there was the opportunity to try out some extreme knitting which everyone was great at!

Our last Yarnbombing Workshop before the actual Yarnbombing Event on Saturday 13 July 2013 is:
Friday 5 July – 10:00 to 12:00
Rowntree Park Café
Rowntree Park, Richardson Street, York, YO23 1JU

Do come and join us!

Extreme Knitting on Extreme Needles

Extreme Knitting
I'm very excited because my super large knitting needles are now up and running (perhaps that should be up and knitting!).  They were made locally and are just great.

The first time I tried them out, they were too long (my fault - they were as I specified them!).  But now they are a little shorter they are fine.  At approx 1.9m long and 50mm wide they are quite an impressively sized pair of needles!

Extreme Knitting

Unsurprisingly they work just the same way as any other knitting needles.(Although with a bit more of a workout!)

Currently the "yarn" I am using has been "made" from an old blanket and I'm doing some test knits to see how it all works out.  I have also tried knitting with about 6 balls of yarn together and that works fine too and produces a more open knit effect.

Extreme Yarn

Anyone who wants to try them out should come along to one of our Yarnbombing Workshops or down to Rowntree Park on Saturday 13 July to our Yarnbombing Event to have a go at extreme knitting.
